Hair Holds Memories

Project type

Poster

Date

June 2023

Location

New York

I've been growing my hair out since February of 2020, and for over the past two years, french braids have been my signature. What started out as not being able to go to a barber during the pandemic, turned into an experience of self-discovery and self-expression. I've always found new ways to reinvent myself and become alternate versions of myself, discovering and gaining new traits and ideas that make me who I am. My hair has been a testament to my perseverance and commitment to personal growth. They say "hair holds emotional weight and memories", so much so that cutting it off can be a form of letting go. Recently, I made the decision to cut off my braids myself in what felt like a spiritual experience and liberation, documenting the process with my camera. This design consists of images of me, before, during, and after buzzing my head and dyeing a spider-web on top.
